Pretoria: Four individuals have been detained by the local law enforcement for throwing stones at the city of Tshwane buses, in three various areas of the city on Monday.
The buses had just returned to services after they were suspended for two months due to them being attacked, just like other city services due to a strike by municipal workers over wage increases. The buses were attacked in three separate areas. Pretoria North, Belie Ombre and around the C De Wet Bus Depot in Pretoria’s Central Business District, this caused damage to the buses and disrupted the city’s public transport system especially for the routes the three buses operated on.
Tshwane Municipality spokesperson Selby Bokaba told the media that among the arrested individuals, one was found in possession of a bag full of stones. “
“The arrests were a result of a multidisciplinary operation undertaken jointly by SAPS Dog Unit and TMPD, aimed at curbing criminality that has characterised the unlawful and unprotected strike by some employees of the city” Bokaba said.
Bokaba further stated that the Tshwane management is has no intent of withdrawing the city’s bus services because of intimidation and that will now increase security to shield the bus drives, commuters and the bus fleet itself.
The suspects are currently facing charges for malicious damage to property and intimidation. Bus services will not be suspended this time around according to Bokaba, as security will be beefed around the busse routes.
