On Friday afternoon, the Netball World Cup trophy arrived in Pretoria Union buildings as it continues Its tour in the country, before the tournament begins. The trophy arrived from Kwa Zulu-Natal after arriving in the country on May 25.
It was announced back in 2019 that South Africa had won the rights to host the 16th staging of the Netball World Cup in 2023. South Africa has been preparing for the momentous event since then, with the tour only commencing a few days ago. Netball president Cecilia Molokwane, along with other government officials of the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture accompanied by public figures from the entertainment industry showed residents of Tshwane the Netball World CUP Trophy as well as taking pictures with fans.
The tournament due to take place from the 28th to 6th August would be the first to be hosted on the African soil, since its inception in 1963. The 2023 netball World Cup was not for Cape Town, the Western Cape province and South Africa, instead it is for Africa as a whole. Mentioned Netball South Africa president Cecilia Molokwane.
“This will be the first time in 60 years the Netball World Cup is hosted on African soil, therefore our expectations for podium finish as hosts is a fair one” Uttered Molkwane. We must ensure that South Africa and other nations on the continent make it to the top, she added.
At least three other African countries will partake in the World Cup tournament, the countries are Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe. For now the Netball World Cup trophy continues its tour, with its next stop being Mpumalanga.
