PRETORIA-Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, professionally known as DJ Maphorisa, was arrested on Sunday afternoon, 07 may 2023, for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Thuli Phongolo.
This tragic incident gained traction after Thuli Phongolo made a statement at the Sandton Police Station. In her statement, it was revealed that this incident took place in Thuli’s apartment in Sandton, Johannesburg.
“I confronted him about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig.”, said Thuli Phongolo in a police statement.
She further mentioned that DJ Maphorisa became aggressive and slapped her during their argument. “He took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck.”, said Thuli in her statement. Apart from hearsay from people who are close to the couple, it is not clear what exactly sparked this argument.
DJ Maphorisa then appeared at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court the following Monday 08 May 2023. According to Phindi Mjonodwane whom is a spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority, Thuli Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement and she agreed for DJ Maphorisa to be released on bail. The bail was set at R4000.
When the fans of both artists heard about this, they fumed and sparked a heated debate on social media platforms.
